ENERGE Greengage
PROJECT OUTLINE (2019-2023)
This project uses Research through Design and Contextmapping method as the main methods to gather insights from the target group. With bottom up clustering, insights are created to kickstart the design process in an iterative way.
DESIGN GOAL
How to create a greener school and involve a resilient learning community that becomes aware of the indoor climate energy use?
THE OUTCOMES
In order to create greener schools:
- What...
A digital platform named Greengage is developed that shows real time data of five different variables and offers data challenges with storytelling to bring awareness to the users (high school students). - Why...
Awareness is created by bringing this topic in the school environment. After awareness students can develop their own actions/behaviors to improve their school and environment. - How...
By providing short and interesting (data) challenges with different learning competences that let users critically think about their energy use in school.
Reseach
The first 1,5 years the TUD ENERGE team on codesign sessions to get to know the wishes, problems, dreams and more related to energy use in school and their personal comfort. All codesign sessions were online and made possible using tools such as MIRO, zoom and google documents (due to pandemic in 2020 to 2022 April).
The first codesign session was about discovering the students wishes and dreams about indoor climate, with prepartion of filling in the digital sensitizing booklet. The second codesign session was to cocreate with the students and teachers on possible solutions that the schools can use without too much budget. And the final codesign session was to evaluate the beta version of Greengage.
During times we were not in context of the school, we make sure we keep in close contact with the users through phone calls, mail and Whatsapp group with secondary students.
My contribution
The ENERGE project provided a lot of opportunities to experience new tasks that contributed within and outside the project. The roles in the project is quite diverse as well. I enjoy exploring and experiencing different hands-on prototyping so it is not only about research or digital solutions, but also in balance with designing physical things.
Down below you find my overall contributions to the ENERGE project:
-Codesign facilitator
-Coaching graduation students related to ENERGE project
-Student assistants manager
-Designing physical parts of Greengage system (Greenpoint)
-Visual Design Lead of Greengage digital platform
-Greengage evaluation program creator

Creating session materials
Throughout the ENERGE research project, numerous sessions with high school students were held from five different countries (F2F and online, due to the pandemic). Creating coherent, clear and attractive visuals with storytelling elements made it more easier to empathise, understand and listen to the end users.
From Data to Visuals
Different visuals from research insights from the session were regularly created by me to inform stakeholders, students and teachers. Here the focus was on providing information in bite-sized way with clear visuals where people can relate to.
Visualising Elemints
Inspired by visual storytelling, I created the ‘Elemints’ for the digital platform Greengage. We wanted to make the invisible ‘data’ visible by making characters embody the different states of data in the measured spaces. Data such as classroom temperature, sound, humidity, air quality, light are included. Can you see which Elemint is visualised as which data?
Greengage Greenpoint
The Greengage digital platform were placed in these Greenpoints and located in the different high schools across EU. I created the design to be lasercutted together. We needed the tablets to be secure and to be studentproof, the greenpoints needed to be easily constructed (like IKEA packages). I created attractive stickers that students could use on the Greenpoints.
